$1.1 Billion in Art Sold in Less Than Three Hours

A single evening only brought in $1 billion at auction one other time, Paul Allen’s estate in 2022.

Christie’s May 18 evening sale was headlined by:

  • Pollock: $181.2M, nearly 3x his previous record

  • Brancusi: $107.6M, second highest sculpture price ever

  • Rothko: $98.4M, a new record for the artist

Obvious outliers, but the evening capped a spring auction season that totaled $2.5 billion (roughly 2x last year). This follows a Q1’26 that saw the postwar contemporary art market grow 23.1%.

Masterworks offers investors the opportunity to invest in blue-chip contemporary and post-war art. Since 2017, it has offered over 500 artworks and raised over $1 billion in total investments.

29 exits to-date have delivered net annualized returns like 16.5%, 17.6% and 17.8% on sold works held over 12 months.

Midjourney — the AI image generator that put AI art on the map — just announced it’s building a full-body ultrasonic scanner that maps your insides in under 60 seconds. And the plan is to put one inside a San Francisco spa by 2027.

Today in AI:
  • Midjourney’s 60-second body scanner heads to a SF spa

  • Adobe’s Firefly goes fully agentic across Creative Cloud

  • AlphaFold’s Nobel laureate leaves DeepMind for Anthropic

What’s new? Midjourney announced Midjourney Medical, a full-body ultrasonic scanning device that produces a millimeter-precise 3D body map in under 60 seconds — with plans to debut the technology at a wellness spa in San Francisco’s Union Square in 2027.

What matters?

  • The scanner works by lowering a person into a shallow water pool ringed with half a million ultrasonic sensors the size of sand grains, which fire soundwaves through the body from every angle to build a 3D image comparable to MRI but roughly 100 times faster.

  • Midjourney built the scanner in partnership with Butterfly Network, an ultrasound chip manufacturer, under an exclusive licensing deal signed in November 2025 — the hardware effort is led by a former Apple Vision Pro engineer.

  • The company’s stated ambition is 50,000 scanners operating worldwide by 2031, with capacity for more annual scans than all MRI machines on Earth combined — leadership says that level of early imaging could “avoid 30 percent of all deaths.”

Why it matters?

Midjourney’s move signals the company is thinking far beyond image generation, betting that the same AI expertise that learned to generate art can learn to read the human body. If the spa model works — making full-body scans as casual as a gym visit — it could pressure traditional healthcare to rethink how preventive imaging is delivered.

GUIDE

What’s new? Adobe expanded Firefly with new agentic capabilities, rolling out an AI assistant that can autonomously handle multi-step creative tasks across Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Frame.io — available in public beta now.

What matters?

  • The new Brand Kit Creation skill lets users describe a style and color palette in plain language, and Firefly generates a complete logo, brand identity system, and social media video from a single prompt.

  • The agentic assistant can now perform complex in-app tasks directly — like syncing multicam footage in Premiere, reorganizing Illustrator layers, or running pre-print checklists in InDesign — without switching tools.

  • Adobe also announced integrations with ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot (Google Gemini coming soon), positioning Firefly as the creative AI layer across every major AI platform.

Why it matters?

Agentic AI in creative tools means designers can hand off repetitive setup and focus on creative decisions. Adobe’s cross-app integration finally makes AI-powered creative workflows feel practical rather than prototype-stage — and with public beta live, you can try it today.

What’s new? John Jumper, the computational chemist who co-created AlphaFold and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, announced he is leaving Google DeepMind after nearly 9 years to join Anthropic.

What matters?

  • Jumper’s AlphaFold cracked one of biology’s hardest problems — predicting 3D protein structures from genetic sequences — and his move is the second major DeepMind exit in days, following Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer’s departure to OpenAI.

  • Anthropic is hosting a science-focused event on June 30, suggesting the company is actively expanding into research beyond language models.

  • The back-to-back departures reinforce a growing perception that Google is struggling to retain top AI talent, even as its underlying research output remains world-class.

Why it matters?

Recruiting a Nobel Prize winner gives Anthropic a level of scientific credibility that no benchmark score can replicate. As the AI talent war accelerates, the flight from Google DeepMind suggests that even the world’s most prestigious AI research lab is feeling the pull of younger rivals with clearer momentum.

Everything else in AI

Google shipped Android 17 with Gemini Omni for conversational video editing and Lyria 3 for AI music generation from text prompts, both rolling out to Pixel devices as part of the June Pixel Drop.

OpenAI launched scheduled tasks in ChatGPT, letting Plus, Pro, and Team users automate recurring work and web monitoring from a dedicated task hub — up to 10 active tasks at a time.

Genesis AI unveiled Eno, a minimalist wheeled robot that skips humanoid design entirely, pairing dexterous human-form hands with an AI foundation model to handle tasks in manufacturing, logistics, and eventually homes.
