PLUS: Samsung Is Putting Gemini AI in 800 Million Devices This Year
The AI world's biggest drama is still unfolding — OpenAI is in damage control after a rushed Pentagon deal backfired spectacularly, Samsung is about to put Gemini AI in the pocket of nearly a billion people. Here's what you need to know.

OpenAI's Pentagon deal blows up — and Claude goes #1 on the App Store
Samsung targets 800 million Gemini-powered devices in 2026

What’s new? OpenAI struck a deal allowing the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy its models in classified environments — announced hours after the Pentagon labeled rival Anthropic a "supply-chain risk." The backlash was immediate and severe. CEO Sam Altman has since admitted the deal looked "opportunistic and sloppy" and is now renegotiating the terms.
What matters?
ChatGPT uninstalls rose 295% day-over-day last Saturday, while Anthropic's Claude hit #1 on the Apple App Store as users switched in protest — the first time Claude has topped the charts.
The renegotiated contract now explicitly bans use of commercially acquired data for domestic surveillance, and bars intelligence agencies including the NSA, DIA, and NGA from the agreement entirely.
Anthropic says it plans to challenge the "supply-chain risk" designation in court — a label never before publicly applied to an American company
Why it matters?
This is the first major public test of how frontier AI labs handle pressure to deploy in sensitive government contexts — and it revealed a genuine fault line between companies willing to draw hard limits and those willing to move fast. The episode handed Anthropic an unexpected wave of public goodwill, and set a precedent every AI company will face sooner or later.
GUIDE
What’s new? Samsung co-CEO TM Roh confirmed the company will double its Google Gemini-powered device footprint from 400 million in 2025 to 800 million by end of 2026, spanning smartphones, tablets, TVs, and home appliances under its "AX" (AI Transformation) strategy.
What matters?
Samsung's "Connect Future" strategy embeds Gemini as the default AI experience across the entire Galaxy ecosystem — giving Google pre-installed distribution at a scale no standalone app can match.
The expansion reaches mid-range and budget Galaxy A-series devices, not just flagships — bringing on-device AI to markets where Apple's premium pricing doesn't reach.
Combined with Apple's reported deal to power a revamped Siri with Gemini, Google now has default AI distribution across both major mobile platforms — a structural advantage over OpenAI and others.
Why it matters?
When 800 million devices share the same AI layer, Gemini stops being a product and becomes infrastructure. This move hands Google the kind of default distribution advantage it once had with search — and it happens in a single calendar year.
